Cat Diarrhoea: Common Causes and Warning Signs

Cats can develop diarrhoea for many reasons, including a sudden diet change, stress, food intolerance, parasites, infections, toxins, inflammatory gastrointestinal disease, pancreatic disease, hyperthyroidism, kidney or liver disease and cancer. Mild, short-lived diarrhoea in an otherwise well adult cat may sometimes resolve without becoming serious, but contact a veterinarian if it persists, becomes frequent or severe, contains blood, appears black or tarry, or occurs with vomiting, appetite loss, weakness, abdominal pain, dehydration or weight loss. Kittens, senior cats and cats with existing medical conditions may become unwell more quickly. Severe or persistent diarrhoea, collapse, marked weakness, significant dehydration, breathing difficulty, suspected poisoning or rapid deterioration requires urgent veterinary attention.

Cat Vomiting: Common Causes and When to Contact a Vet

Cats can vomit for many reasons, ranging from hairballs or a temporary digestive upset to parasites, foreign-body obstruction, toxins, inflammatory gastrointestinal disease, pancreatitis, kidney disease, hyperthyroidism, diabetes or cancer. Vomiting is an active process usually involving nausea, retching and abdominal contractions, while regurgitation is generally more passive. An isolated episode in an otherwise well cat may sometimes be monitored, but repeated or persistent vomiting, blood, appetite loss, weakness, diarrhea, dehydration, pain, weight loss, inability to keep water down or suspected toxin or foreign-object ingestion requires veterinary advice. Severe or protracted vomiting, collapse, breathing difficulty, marked weakness, a painful or distended abdomen, or inability to urinate requires urgent veterinary attention.

Signs Your Cat May Be Sick: When to Contact a Vet

Signs that a cat may be unwell include eating less, drinking or urinating more or less than usual, vomiting, diarrhoea, constipation, weight loss, hiding, lethargy, unusual behaviour, reduced grooming, mobility changes, coughing, rapid or difficult breathing, eye or nose discharge, skin or coat changes and changes in litter-tray habits. Cats can sometimes show illness subtly, so a meaningful change from your cat's normal routine may be important even when no dramatic symptom is present. Contact a veterinarian if a change persists, recurs or occurs with other concerning signs. Seek urgent veterinary care for difficulty or open-mouth breathing, collapse or unresponsiveness, seizures, severe weakness, inability to urinate, major trauma or bleeding, abnormal gum colour, suspected poisoning or rapid deterioration.

New Kitten Checklist: Everything You Need Before Bringing a Kitten Home

Before bringing a kitten home, prepare a quiet safe area with food, fresh water, litter trays, hiding places, comfortable bedding, scratching surfaces and suitable toys. Kitten-proof the home by securing windows, balconies, electrical cables, medicines, chemicals, toxic plants and small objects that could be swallowed. Find a veterinarian in advance, gather the kitten's health, vaccination and identification records, arrange an early veterinary visit and give your kitten time to explore their new home gradually rather than introducing everything at once.

International Pet Travel: What Documents Might You Need?

International pet travel may require identification records, vaccination certificates, veterinary health certificates, laboratory test results, import or export permits, parasite-treatment records and, in some cases, quarantine arrangements. The exact documents depend on your pet's species, country of origin, destination, transit countries, travel history and purpose of travel. Some countries recognise specific pet passports, while others require official certificates issued or endorsed shortly before departure. Certain birds, reptiles and other regulated species may also need wildlife-trade permits. Always verify the complete itinerary with official government authorities and transport providers, and begin preparations early because some requirements take months to complete.

Changing Your Pet's Food: How to Transition Diets Safely

Senior Pet Care: How Needs Change With Age

Growing older is a natural part of every animal's life, but ageing does not affect all pets in the same way. A twelve-year-old dog, an eight-year-old rabbit, a twenty-year-old parrot and a senior horse may have very different needs, even when each is considered older for their species.
