Dog Diarrhoea: Common Causes and Warning Signs

Dog Diarrhoea: Common Causes and Warning Signs

Dogs can develop diarrhoea for many reasons, including eating something unusual, a sudden diet change, stress, parasites, infections, food intolerance, inflammatory gastrointestinal disease, toxins, pancreatic disease, hormonal disorders or other systemic illness. Mild diarrhoea in an otherwise bright, healthy adult dog may sometimes resolve within a short period, but contact a veterinarian if it persists, becomes frequent or severe, contains blood, appears black or tarry, or is accompanied by vomiting, appetite loss, lethargy, abdominal pain, weight loss or signs of dehydration. Puppies, senior dogs and dogs with underlying medical conditions may become unwell more quickly. Seek urgent veterinary care if your dog is collapsing, severely weak, markedly dehydrated, has severe bloody diarrhoea, a painful or distended abdomen, breathing difficulty, or you suspect poisoning or another emergency.

Your Pet's First Vet Visit: What to Expect

Bringing a pet to the veterinarian for the first time is an important step in building a healthy life together. Whether you have welcomed a puppy, adopted an adult cat, brought home two guinea pigs or taken responsibility for a horse, that initial appointment creates an opportunity to understand your animal's health, identify potential concerns and establish a plan for future care.

Signs Your Dog May Be Sick: When to Contact a Vet

Dogs can show illness in many ways, including reduced appetite, changes in drinking or urination, vomiting, diarrhoea, coughing, breathing changes, lethargy, unusual behaviour, limping, pain, weight change, skin or coat problems, eye or ear discharge and changes in stool or urine. No single sign identifies the cause, and some illnesses begin with subtle changes from your dog's normal routine. Contact a veterinarian if a change persists, recurs or is accompanied by other concerning signs. Seek urgent veterinary care for difficulty breathing, collapse or unresponsiveness, seizures, severe weakness or paralysis, major bleeding or trauma, pale or blue gums, a swollen painful abdomen, inability to urinate, suspected poisoning or rapid deterioration.

Dog Vomiting: Common Causes and When to Contact a Vet

Dogs can vomit for many reasons, ranging from eating something unusual or a temporary stomach upset to infections, parasites, pancreatitis, intestinal obstruction, toxins or diseases affecting organs such as the liver or kidneys. Vomiting is an active process usually involving nausea, retching and abdominal contractions, whereas regurgitation is more passive. One isolated episode in an otherwise healthy dog may sometimes be monitored, but contact a veterinarian promptly if vomiting is repeated, persists, contains blood, is accompanied by pain, lethargy, dehydration, diarrhea or weight loss, or if your dog cannot keep water down. Seek urgent veterinary care if your dog has a swollen or painful abdomen, repeated unproductive retching, collapse, breathing difficulty, significant weakness, or you suspect a toxin or foreign object has been swallowed.

Senior Dog Care: Supporting Health and Quality of Life

Dogs do not suddenly become old on a particular birthday. Ageing happens gradually, often through small changes that are easy to overlook: a slower morning walk, a longer pause before climbing the stairs, less enthusiasm for a favourite game or more time spent resting.

Changing Your Pet's Food: How to Transition Diets Safely

For many healthy pets, changing food gradually can reduce digestive upset and make the new diet easier to accept. Instead of replacing the old food completely overnight, introduce the new diet progressively while monitoring appetite, stools or droppings, vomiting, behaviour and weight.

Senior Pet Care: How Needs Change With Age

Growing older is a natural part of every animal's life, but ageing does not affect all pets in the same way. A twelve-year-old dog, an eight-year-old rabbit, a twenty-year-old parrot and a senior horse may have very different needs, even when each is considered older for their species.

Pet Enrichment: Why Mental Stimulation Matters

Pet Enrichment: Why Mental Stimulation Matters

Pet enrichment is the deliberate creation of opportunities for animals to express important natural behaviours and engage meaningfully with their environment. Depending on the species, that might involve foraging, sniffing, digging, climbing, hiding, chewing, hunting-like play, training, exploring, bathing, flying, social interaction or simply being able to choose where to rest.

How Often Should Your Pet See a Vet?

How Often Should Your Pet See a Vet?

Most healthy pets benefit from regular preventive veterinary care, but there is no single schedule that is right for every animal. AAHA recommends at least an annual veterinary examination for pets generally, while senior animals and pets with chronic health conditions often need more frequent visits. The right schedule depends on species, age, breed, health, lifestyle and environment.

How to Choose the Right Veterinarian for Your Pet

How to Choose the Right Veterinarian for Your Pet

Choose a veterinarian by first confirming that the practice treats your pet’s species and can provide the type of care they are likely to need. Then compare professional credentials or accreditation where available, emergency arrangements, services, location, accessibility, communication, continuity of care and fees. The best choice is not necessarily the nearest or cheapest practice, but one whose capabilities and approach fit both your pet and your circumstances.

How to Prepare Your Pet for a Vet Appointment

How to Prepare Your Pet for a Vet Appointment

Prepare for a veterinary appointment by gathering your pet’s relevant medical history, current medications, vaccination information and a short list of questions or symptoms you want to discuss. Plan safe transport in advance and tell the clinic beforehand if your pet is particularly fearful, reactive or difficult to handle. For cats and other carrier-trained pets, making the carrier familiar well before the appointment can help reduce stress. Always follow the veterinary practice’s specific instructions about food, medication or preparation for procedures.

Pet Emergency Information: What Every Guardian Should Keep Ready

Every pet guardian should keep a simple emergency profile containing their pet’s identification, primary and emergency veterinary contacts, current medications, important medical conditions, allergies or adverse reactions, microchip details and relevant insurance information. You should also know where your pet would receive out-of-hours care and how you would transport them there. If your pet develops difficulty breathing, becomes unresponsive, has significant trauma, seizures, severe bleeding or another potentially life-threatening problem, contact an emergency veterinary professional immediately.

Preventive Pet Care: A Complete Guide for Pet Guardians

Preventive pet care means protecting your pet’s health before problems become serious. It combines regular veterinary care with appropriate vaccination, parasite management, nutrition, weight and dental care, everyday observation and species-specific husbandry. The right plan depends on your pet’s species, age, health, lifestyle and where they live or travel, so preventive care should always be individual rather than based on a universal checklist.

What Happens During a Routine Veterinary Health Check?

What Happens During a Routine Veterinary Health Check?

During a routine health check, your veterinarian assesses your pet’s current health and looks for changes that may not yet be obvious at home. The appointment usually combines a discussion about your pet’s health, behaviour and lifestyle with a hands-on physical examination. Depending on the animal, the veterinarian may assess weight and body condition, eyes, mouth, skin, heart and breathing, abdomen, movement and other species-specific areas. They may also review nutrition, vaccinations, parasite prevention, dental or oral health and other preventive needs. Any additional tests or treatments should be recommended according to your individual pet rather than automatically performed at every appointment.

What Is a Digital Pet Passport? A Guide for Pet Guardians

What Is a Digital Pet Passport? A Guide for Pet Guardians

A digital pet passport is a digital profile that brings together important information about a pet, such as identity details, microchip information, vaccinations, medical history, medications, veterinary contacts, insurance and travel documents. It can make records easier to organise, update and share with trusted carers or professionals. However, the term “digital pet passport” is not the same as an official pet passport used for international travel. Travel requirements depend on the destination, species, country of residence and journey, and authorities may require specific original passports, health certificates or other official documentation. A digital record should therefore complement—not replace—legally required travel documents unless the relevant authority explicitly recognises it.

Sharing Your Pet's Medical Records With a New Vet: What You Need to Know

When changing veterinarians, ask your previous clinic to transfer your pet's medical records to the new practice before the first appointment. Important documents include medical history, vaccination records, medications, allergies, laboratory results, diagnostic images, surgical reports and specialist recommendations. Confirm that the new clinic has received everything and keep a personal copy where possible. Record-access rules, consent requirements and transfer procedures vary by country.

Pet Care Apps: What Should an All-in-One Pet App Actually Do?

Pet Care Apps: What Should an All-in-One Pet App Actually Do?

A genuinely all-in-one pet care app should do more than store reminders. It should give every pet an individual profile that connects health records, vaccinations, medications, appointments, everyday care, professionals, documents and shared family access. The strongest platforms should also make information easy to share, support multiple species, protect personal data and use AI as a support layer rather than a replacement for veterinary professionals.
